Popcorn ceilings were the go to for ceiling covers for many, many years decades ago. The unfortunate aspect of this type of covering is that for a certain period of time the cancer causing asbestos was used in popcorn ceilings.
In 1977 it was banned from being used in further popcorn ceiling products. The problem is there are a lot of homes that still have popcorn ceilings.
I just revamped a house in Clairemont Mesa, the home was built in 1960 and in most of the home had popcorn ceilings and most likely had asbestos in it. In order to actually know is to hire a professional to come and test it, which can be pricey. The homeowner did not want to do that or pay to have them taken down, so he opted for putting a coat of paint over which encases the asbestos and prevents it from breaking off and getting airborne which is the danger.
Over time popcorn ceilings can look drab, dirty and spraying fresh paint on top makes it look brand new. At JCE Painting, we do it all, we remove, re-drywall and can make any ceiling look up to date or revamped.
Pros And Cons Of Popcorn Ceilings
Pros – it is a noise canceller. If you have a second story it is great to have that extra layer, even if it is a thin one to help with any noise. It also hides any imperfections like poor workmanship, tape lines, water damage spots etc.
Cons– Asbestos is the biggest one for the time period it is related to. Another is when you have to repair a section of the popcorn ceiling it can be a little difficult, you have to cut out the area and when you fix it rematch up the spray popcorn perfectly with the rest. Any discoloration will show, if the ceiling is dirty and you can’t clean it either so a new paint job should be done.
When debating on what to do with your ceiling it is important to weigh out all options and most importantly, ask a professional for help.
